How to Start a Knife Sharpening Business

I started Seriously Fast Sharpening in 2024 out of my garage with a $240 sharpener and a phone. Within two months I was doing $300+ days. Here is everything I learned, pricing, equipment, technique, and the marketing that actually works.

Why Knife Sharpening?

I spent five years doing web development and ecommerce. Before that, maintenance, painting apartments, fixing water heaters, working with my hands. When I saw a post from a college kid making $500 a day sharpening knives, I knew right then: I could do this.

Equipment

Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite
With blade grinder attachment. Fast, portable, versatile. Handles chef knives to lawnmower blades. Under 2 minutes per knife once you have the technique.
  • , Belts from Cliff Curry -- 120, 400, 600 grit + leather strop
  • , Good stropping compound (smooth-applying, not chalky)
  • , Isopropyl alcohol (91%+) -- wipe blades clean before and after
  • , Shop towels or microfiber cloths -- microfiber preferred, won't scratch the blade
  • , Full-face shield or safety glasses -- metal sparks fly, non-negotiable
  • , Dust mask or respirator (N95 minimum) -- fine metal dust builds up fast
  • , Riser platform upgrade for consistent angles (sold separately)
  • , Practice knives from a resale shop -- never learn on customer blades
  • , Portable power station for mobile work

Technique: Knife in Under 2 Minutes

1
Inspect the blade
Look for chips, tip damage, and the existing angle. Check if the bolster needs reduction.
2
Set your angle
Wusthof runs 14°, most German knives 15–20°. Check the knife angle wiki for every brand.
3
Establish a burr
Work one side on 400 grit until you feel a wire edge running the full length. Do not skip this.
4
Match your strokes
Count your passes on side one, then do the same number on side two. Equal removal keeps the profile straight.
5
Progress through grits
Move up to 600 grit, then to the stropping belt. 8 passes per side, down to 2, 2, 1, 1, light, light.
6
Deburr at low speed
Always strop at low speed. High speed on a polishing belt burns your edge and undoes your work.
7
Test and deliver
Slice Rizla green cigarette paper. Clean cut = ~150 BESS. Utility razor sharp. Every knife, every time.

Most common mistake: not establishing a full burr before flipping the blade. Nine times out of ten, if the knife is not getting sharp, that is why. Feel for it along the entire edge before moving on.

Join every local community group in your area and post your services. More customers from Facebook than Instagram, by a long shot.
Yard Signs
Busy intersections around town with your phone number. Simple, cheap, and effective.
Word of Mouth
Follow up 2 hours after every pickup. 'How are the knives?' One happy customer tells five people.
B2B Outreach
Restaurants, grooming salons, landscaping companies. Offer recurring contracts. This is where the real long-term money is.
