The Mobile Equipment List

Portable Power Station

Weighs almost nothing. Powers the sharpener ~4 hours on a full charge. No generator, no inverter wiring.

Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite

Same system as the garage. Lightweight, portable, under 2 minutes per knife.

Abrasive belts

120, 400, 600 grit + leather strop. All fit in a small bag.

Isopropyl alcohol (91%+)

Wipe each blade before and after. Customers notice a clean, sharp knife coming back to them.

Shop towels / microfiber cloths

Microfiber preferred -- softer on finished blades and leaves no lint or scratches.

Full-face shield or safety glasses

Sparks and metal fragments fly. Non-negotiable every time the grinder is running.

Dust mask or respirator (N95+)

Belt grinding throws fine metal and abrasive dust. A half-face respirator is better for daily mobile use.

Supplies Bag

Belts, compound, spray bottle for cooling, isopropyl, microfiber, safety gear, sharpness tester, business cards. That is it.

The entire operation fits in a compact SUV with room to spare. Seen sharpeners run mobile from a Toyota Corolla.

Route Planning: Maximize Your Day

The secret to profitable mobile sharpening is clustering. Never drive 30 minutes for a single $20 order. Group multiple pickups in the same area on the same day.

Group by location

Batch bookings by zip code. Three pickups within five miles? Schedule them in the same window.

Pick up first, sharpen in between

Pick up all orders in one area, then park and knock out all the sharpening at once.

Chain drop-offs with next pickups

When you drop off the first batch, head toward the next pickup zone. The route flows in a circle.

Communicate ETAs

Text when you are on the way, when you have picked up, and when blades are ready. Professional communication is everything.

Tips for Mobile Success

Be visible

Have a sign, wear something with your business name. Walk-up customers happen when you are sharpening in a parking lot.

Keep it clean

Spray bottle for cooling, isopropyl for wiping blades, a towel. Customers notice when you hand back a blade that is clean and sharp.

Follow up

Two hours after every drop-off: 'I just wanted to follow up and see how the knives are for you?' If they are happy, ask for a review.
